Gallery

Click HERE for a page of biographical information and pictures of those I've identified.

Right now the photo gallery is thanks to Scott Zederbaum, who sent me scanned images that his father Herman "Zeke" Zederbaum took during the war. I've tried to sort them into categories and label the ones I could. Zeke provided some labels of his own--some are in quotes on the image where it made the image easier to read and some I've left because his handwriting makes it so much better. I have some photos from my father too that I'll add as I get them scanned and sorted.

If anyone can identify these people or places, please let me know!

(Photos with "Levinson" in the corner or of HQ were supplied by Laura Levinson Smith from her father's collection)

And meeting the General--

The sign behind the sergeant and General Burress reads...

Building the Bridge

J. P. Wallis and Carl Blanton both said that they were proud of the Bailey Bridge they built at Stuttgart. It felt good to reconstruct some stuff. (2003 Florida reunion)

Inspections

The inspections, after combat, were bad. They remembered painting shovel blades for inspections done by officers who'd just gotten off the boat. (2003 Florida reunion)

"I liked everybody. In the war, I was a pretty good soldier, but for drilling and inspecting and stuff that never did go much with me. Shooting and fighting, do it, get it over with, and go home." (T.C. Moore, 2001)

Football

Carl Blanton and Ding played football for the battalion. Carl remembered one game in particular when they had several stands on the goal line. T.C. Moore said, hey! you're killing me! He played guard.

They used to call Carl Blanton "Red Grange" because he'd run with the ball.

They played eight or so games. And went to the big games between the Divisions, the "big leagues." (2003 Florida reunion)

Parades and Awards

July 4, 1945

Parade through town, or as Dad said, "Engineer Bn. paraded through the streets of Geislingen the 4th, gave the civilians a show."

This parade however I suspect is the day they got the Presidential Unit Citation. (Zederbaum)

I'm not sure what ceremony this is, but it looks like it might be the castle at Donzdorf. It was taken by Major Levinson, Headquarters, 325th Battalion. There's a nice brass band to the right, to accompany the brass walking across the field. Looks like Germans/locals are on the far side.

Looks like the same occasion, though now there are three brass. I wonder who got to hang around on the fringes and didn't have to be in formation or in the band.

Oddly enough, this looks like Gordon Morse, my father, exchanging salutes with the brass. I have no idea at the moment what this is and why Major Levinson was taking pictures.

And now there are five brass walking away. Did Company C get a separate citation from the Battalion? Dad would have been acting as company commander at Donzdorf.
