Tourism

One of the great activities was tourism for men who hadn't been out of their hometown before the war. Leaves during the fighting took them to Brussels, England, Paris, and Nancy. After the fighting and while they were waiting for the anticipated deployment to the Pacific they saw Switzerland, the Riviera, and around Germany. And travel while they were waiting for the point system to take them home helped kill the time.

May 26, 1945 "Since the war ended have been running a one man excursion of Europe and wheels are nearly run off the jeep. It is a beautiful country, partial to Southern Germany and Austria however. Set my foot over the Swiss border day before yesterday. Resting up today. Feel as though I had been out on a bender. (Gordon Morse to Margaret Morse)

Brussels

Everyone who went to Brussels had to take a picture of this "fountain." This is Zeke Zederbaum's.
The American Cemetary in Belgium (Zederbaum)

Heidelberg

T.C. Moore in Heidelberg as a tourist and shopper.
Heidelberg was a city that was relatively untouched, so it was a relief to visit there.
I always thought this photo should be called "The Difference between West Point and OCS." Dad preferred fatigues and wearing no insignia and being with his men. He also said that he could never keep the crease in his pants long enough to stay an officer.
This is labeled "Bagley" on the back, but it's hard for me to tell. They either went several times or Bagley was along with Bell and Morse.
Bagley and a friend. This isn't identified as Heidelberg, but for now I'll guess it is.

Italy

"Coliseum, Italy" (Zederbaum)

London

Lots of leave during the occupation was spent in London also. "Tower of London" (Zederbaum)

Paris

J. P. wouldn't give 15 cents for anything French. This seems to have been a universal opinion. And that included Paris. (J. P. Wallis, 2003 Florida reunion
The black market was bad and profit being made everywhere. J.P. got leave to Paris, but wasn't going to take clothes. He filled his duffel with cigarettes. He'd heard you could get $100 for a carton in Paris. Just as he was leaving, the Army issued an edict that a man could only take home 1 1/2 times his pay. He threw out all the cigarettes in disgust. (J. P. Wallis, 2003 Florida reunion
Everyone commented on the French plumbing and lack thereof. "Paris--Outside Latrine" (Zederbaum)
And some more conventional Paris sights. "Arc de Triomph" (Zederbaum)

Riviera for Enlisted Men--Nice

There was an enlisted men's and an officer's resort in different Riviera cities--which meant, as the sign reads "No Saluting by Restees Required in This Area." That gets the big "OK."
